Photosynthesis

Today, class will begin in the Satellite Lab. I appreciate all of the hard work that you put into the first quarter and would like some feedback from you. Please complete this survey so that I can find out what areas I need to improve to make my class a better place for you.

Quarter 1 Survey

After the survey, please get a webquest handout from me and begin by going to this NOVA site.

Objectives:

  • I can identify the reactants of photosynthesis.
  • I can identify the products of photosynthesis.
  • I can explain how photosynthesis creates a relationship between plants and animals.

Language objectives:

  • I will make meaning of lyrics in a song and put the ideas into my own words.

October Process Words

  • Evaluate (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Represent (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Refer (7, 8th grade)
  • Refute (7, 8th grade)
  • Confirm (8th grade)
  • Consider (8th grade)

Illuminating Photosynthesis by NOVA

Halfway through the class, we will return to the science class to continue talking about photosynthesis. If you did not finish the activity in the Satellite Lab, please do so for next class.

Photosynthesis Song

Create a diagram that includes the main components of photosynthesis.

Plant Study

Parent conferences are today and I look forward to meeting your parents. Please feel free to come to the conference if you would like. After all, the conference is about you. Because of conferences, classes are only 1/2 the normal amount of time. We are going to continue with your plant study.

What have you done?  You have selected a plant on the AST campus to watch for the rest of the year. (Some of you also found cool things outside by being great observers!)

You drew a location map that shows where your plant is located on the AST campus. Can someone else use your map to get to your plant?

Qualitative vs Quantitative Observations - today, you will make 5 of each type of observation.
(Quality)           (Quantity)

Predictions - What will your the branch that you are observing look like in one month?

Weekend - Please go outside and observe something that is living. Write a "blog post" that includes:

  • A colored drawing
  • A story that describes your experience

Body System Review

Today we will review the three body systems that we have been studying.

  • Circulatory
  • Digestive
  • Respiratory
How are these systems work together?

How is the structure of these systems related?

How does surface area help each system?

Digestive System

What have you eaten in the last (almost) 48 hours? I hope you enjoyed tracking the food that you put into your body.

Objectives:

  • I can identify and describe the function of key features in the digestive system.

Language objectives:

  • I can summarize key information when reading from a text.
  • I can represent information in a visual format.

October Process Words

  • Evaluate (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Represent (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Refer (7, 8th grade)
  • Refute (7, 8th grade)
  • Confirm (8th grade)
  • Consider (8th grade)

Food Tracking - What have you eaten in the last (almost) 48 hours?

  • What did you enjoy about tracking your food?
  • What was difficult?
  • Can you identify any patterns or habits in the food choices you make or the frequency that you eat?
  • What surprised you about your eating?

Role of the Digestive System in your body - vocabulary organizer
  • Support Text (p. 45-50)
  • We will read pages 45-47 together. Reading Focus: Summarizing Key Information

For next class, please reread the remainder of the chapter. Questions 1-6 on page 50 - look at your answers from last time. Did you fully answer the question?

Question focus - Answer each question so that the person reading your answer will know exactly what was the question.

Respiratory Review & Digestive Preview

Welcome back to Life Science after a long break. Your task over the break was to spend some time outside. I am excited to hear your stories. Please take out your new “blog posts” and reread what you wrote.

Objectives:

  • I can identify and describe the function of key features in the respiratory system (review).

October Process Words
  • Evaluate (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Represent (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Refer (7, 8th grade)
  • Refute (7, 8th grade)
  • Confirm (8th grade)
  • Consider (8th grade)

Review of Respiratory System Components

Digestive System Preview
  1. Make a sketch of a human body and add in as many components as you know that are part of the digestive system.
  2. Can you describe the function of each?
  3. Read pages 45-50
  4. Answer questions 1-6 on page 50.

Food Tracking - Until the next class (Thursday) keep a journal of everything that you eat. How detailed can you be?

Respiratory System Drama

Objectives:
  • Model the respiratory system and describe its key features.

Language objectives:

  • Use full sentences to describe the purpose and action of the respiratory system.

October Process Words
  • Evaluate (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Represent (6, 7, 8th grade)
  • Refer (7, 8th grade)
  • Refute (7, 8th grade)
  • Confirm (8th grade)
  • Consider (8th grade)

Task: Each group is tasked with creating a "skit" that shows the purpose of the respiratory system. Whiteboard used to plan (gameboard).

Outside Plants - If time allows, we will test the maps of other students. Where is my partner’s plant?

Have a great weekend! Over the weekend, your assignment is to spend at least 30 minutes outside in a green space (park, greenway, etc). Write a blog page that is a story from this experience.

Thinking about respiration & looking at plants

Happy Friday! Today we will continue to work on observation skills and discuss techniques to use when reading a text book.

Objectives:

  • Closely observe the development of a plant. How closely can your sketch represent the actual item?
  • Preview respiratory system.
Language objectives:
  • Reading for understanding

Opening: Avocado Plant observation - it has been one month. How does your prediction match the actual growth of the avocado? Make a new sketch.

Respiration

We did the pre-reading step in class. What do you already know about the respiratory system and cellular respiration? As you read, please fill in the rest. Technique: close your book before you write to see if you retain the information.

Outside Plant observation - each person chose a plant that will be observed throughout the year.
